![]() Gabi and Alban pose as a carefree, adventurous couple during their entire time spent with James and Em, but by the end of their time on Li Tolqa, they show a grittier, daunting version of themselves-two people entrenched by the responsibilities of the upper class for Alban, it's maintaining his career and position as an upper class elite, for Gabi, it's maintaining her status as a well-adjusted housewife, despite her own desire to indulge in chaos. The most glaring example is James, who uses the Infinity Pool's effects to save his own life, and then continues to abuse its effects to commit deviant acts. Every character in the film flees accountability in some regard. Infinity Pool is a tale of accountability. Gabi's initial ruse as a fan of his novel gains her James' trust, and gives way to the chain of events that leaves James a prisoner to the Infinity's Pool addictive nature. More than art, James is driven by vanity and narcissism. Gabi addresses James' lack of creativity, reading negative reviews from his one and only published book and denoting its lack of substance.
